A thin rotary cutting disc includes a series of cutting elements arranged peripherally and a reinforcing portion preventing flexing of the disc. The cutting process involves a single working passage of the disc, as it is driven in rotation, over the surface of the workpiece in a configuration corresponding to a preformed template. Two movable chassis (10,13) capable of displacement in orthogonal directions are controlled in response to the movements of a probe (15) over the surface of the template (16). The second chassis carries a drive motor (17) which rotates the cutting disc (18) in engagement with the rotating workpiece (1).
