Gasification process and appts. for carbonaceous solid materials

A process for the gasification of carbonaceous solid materials using gaseous oxygen-contg. gasification media is carried out in a cylindrical fluidised bed gasifier whose reaction chamber has a lower section in the form of an inverted truncated cone in which the larger part of the fluidised bed is contained and into which the gasification medium, the feedstock and recycled solids carried out of the unit are fed. The height (h) of the lower section (3) is between 1 and 6 times the diameter (d) of the cylindrical section, and the introduction of the gasification media (14,16,21,22) is arranged such that a uniform radial gas flow profile is generated in the bed, and the mean gas velocity parallel to the axis of the gasifier is constant or increases only slightly, at least in the region of the bed. Also claimed is a fluidised bed gasifier having a lower conical section which has a half-angle of between 2 and 20 deg. C.
