The present invention includes packaging units (10) which include a generally rigid support base (36) having a bottom wall (38) having edges (40), side walls (44) and corners (54). Each side wall (44) extends upwardly from an edge (40) and each corner (54) extends upwardly from an edge (40) and each corner (54) extends upwardly from an intersection of two edges (40). Generally cylindrical objects (12) are arranged in an assembly on the support base in at least one vertical column or horizontal row. Each object has a top end, bottom end and side extending therebetween, a portion of which can contact the support base. The assembly is free of walls between the objects of the assembly. A generally rigid lid (86) has a top wall (88), edges (94) and corners (106). Each edge of the lid has a side wall (96) extending downwardly therefrom and each corner (106) extends downwardly from an intersection of two edges (94). Each corner (54) of the support base is adjacent to or connected to a corresponding corner (106) of the lid or by corner protectors (126) extending between the corresponding corners of the support base and lid. Each side wall (44) of the support base is spaced apart from each corresponding side wall (96) of the lid. A retainer means (136) extends around the support base, assembly of cylindrical objects and lid to maintain the integrity of the packaging unit during movement thereof.
