The use of an alloy steel of the following compsn. for hollow constructional profiles, esp. for reinforcing vehicle side doors, is new. The steel has the compsn. (by wt.) 0.17-0.28% C, 0.30-0.49% Si, 1.30-2.5% Mn, less than 0.015% P, less than 0.010% S, up to 0.49% Cr, 0.20-0.40% Mo, 0.05-0.19% Ni, up to 0.30% Cu, 0.020-0.050% Al, 0.02-0.07% Ti, 0.0015-0.0050% B, 0.01-0.10% Nb, 0.01-0.10% V, max. 150 ppm. N, balance Fe and impurities, with the proviso that V+Nb+Ti is less than 0.15%. Also claimed are (i) a process for prodn. of a welded hollow constructional profile of an air-hardenable steel of the above compsn.; and (ii) a door reinforcing element made of the above alloy steel.
