Needles are selected, esp. on a knitting machine with a patterning arrangement with one or more control magnets, by releasing them with a spring force from a permanent holding magnet through a cancelling current impulse. The spring (6) is at right angles to a flat, stiff sheet metal base member (5) which is fitted with a roughly circular bearing peg (9) on the opposite side.
