FIELD: inorganic chemistry, particular, production of hydroxide gels, particular, sorbents based on iron hydroxide. SUBSTANCE: method for production of sorbent containing metal hydroxide includes its precipitation in form of hydrogel by reaction of metal salt with alkali in the presence of organic substance, its holding and filtering with subsequent drying and granulation of finished product. Reacted with alkali is salt of trivalent iron. Organic substance is used in form of nitriltrimethylphosphonic acid in molar ratio to iron of (0.01-0.5):5. Reaction between initial substances is conducted in weakly alkali medium and after adding of nitriltrimethylphosphonic acid, pH is brought up to 3.5-4.5. In so doing, sorbent with cation- exchange function resistant to acid is produced with nitroltrimethylphosphonic acid-to-iron ratio of (0.3-0.5): 1, and with nitriltrimethylphosphonic acid-to-iron ratio of (0.01-0.07):1 the obtained sorbent features anion-exchange function resistant to acid.
