The remote control equipment (FWG) and user access equipment (UAE) are held at a central station (ZE) in communication with a number of sub-stations (US1-US3) each housing a remote unit (FWE) and four sets of network operating equipment (NBM1-NBM4). Each set has its own individual address and category assignment included with user data in the protocol involved in transmission of control and monitoring information between the remote unit and the central equipment. The central controller (ZSE) can be accessed by the user via an internal bus (IBUS) so that e.g. equipment of one predetermined category is monitored and controlled.
