Switches with current connections and contacts, of which at least one is movable, and with an associated drive for opening the moving contact when a predetermined electric current intensity is exceeded are known. Devices in which the drive is a thermoelectric drive, a disc-shaped resistance body for high-intensity discharges being provided between the contacts in a closed housing made of insulating material, are likewise known. According to the invention, the insulating material housing (1) comprises a plurality of resistance bodies (21 to 25) and associated electrode discs (11 to 16) as contacts which are connected such that electrically they are in parallel and mechanically they are in series. In this way the switching capacity is substantially increased whilst the structure remains compact.
