(Hetero)aromatic polymers (A) contg. repeat units of formula (I) are new. Ar, Ar' = aryl, pref. opt. substd. phenyl, e.g. fluorophenyl or chlorophenyl; Y, Z = (hetero)aromatic gps. with two electrophilically substd. constituents, or divalent (hetero)aromatic gps. chosen from the benzene, xylene, hydroquinone dialkyl ethers, diphenyl ether, diphenyl sulphide, biphenyl, naphthalene, N-alkyldiphenylamine, triphenylamine, N-alkyl carbazoles, phenothiazine, N-alkyl-phenothiazines, dibenzothiophene, dibenzofuran, thianthrene, dibenzodioxin, hydroquinone diphenyl ether, 1,4-bis(phenylthio)benzene, 1,4- or 1,3-bis(4-phenoxy-benzoyl)benzene, 1,4- or 1,3-bis(4-phenylthio-benzoyl)benzene, (bi)thiophene, ferrocene, azulene, dibenzo-18-crown-6 ether, bis(2-methoxy-phenoxy)ethyl)ether, tetraphenylethylene or 1,4-bis(2-cyanostyryl)-2,5-dimethoxybenzene. The prepn. of (A) by reacting (hetero)aromatic cpds. of formula H-Y-H with diols of formula Ar - CHOH - Z - CHOH - Ar' is also claimed, the polymerisation being carried out in the presence of acidic condensation polymerisation agents, proton acids and/or Lewis acids, the condensation polymerisation agent being used as a solvent and opt. present in excess.
