An electromagnetic needle selection appts. for knitting machines has adjustable jacks to push out the needles where each needle jack can be set in one of the two positions governing whether the needle is ready for knitting or not knitting. A second switchable magnetic field is provided to set the jack (11) and its associated needle (12) in the other of the two positions.
