1-oxo-2-(phenylsulphonyl-amino)pentyl piperidine derivs. of formula (I), their free bases or acid addn. salts are new. R1, R2 = H or 1-4C alkyl; R3 = 1-7C alkyl, -(CH2)nOCH3 or -CH2O(C2H4O)mCH3; n, m = 1-3; R4 = H or halo; R5 = 1-4C alkyl; A = phenyl, pyridinyl, thienyl or furyl (all opt. substd. by one or more halo, 1-4C alkyl, 1-4C alkoxy or CF3) or 5-8C cycloalkyl. Also claimed are cpds. of formula (XI). R8 = H or trifluoroacetyl; R9 = -COR3 and R7 = OH; or R8 = trifluoroacetyl, R9 = -COR3 and R7 = Cl; or R8, R9 = -COR3' and R7 = Cl or OH; Z = I or gp. A; R3' = 1-7C alkyl.
