A unitary protective roller cover adapted for use in a sliding gate system which includes a horizontally disposed gate having an upper horizontal gate support rod guided by at least one grooved roller rotatably mounted on a stub shaft in a mounting bracket clamped to a vertical support post. The unitary protective cover includes a roller enclosure portion having an open bottom and an integral stub shaft and mounting bracket enclosure portion having an open bottom. The bracket cover portion has a pair of spaced vertical side walls merging with a top portion covering the stub shaft and a portion of the mounting bracket. The stub shaft enclosure portion merges with the roller enclosure portion to form an open bottom unitary structure whereby the roller, stub shaft and a substantial portion of the mounting bracket are environmentally protected and entry of fingers and clothing beneath the roller is precluded.
