PURPOSE: To suppress reaction with a matrix metal in producing a composite and prevent physical properties from deteriorating by coating the surface of a potassium titanate fiber with any compound of nitrides, carbides or borides of titanium. CONSTITUTION: A potassium titanate fiber is heated in an atmosphere comprising a gas containing any of nitrogen, carbon or boron, e.g. NH3 gas, methane gas or boron tribromide to form a nitride, a carbide or a boride layer of titanium on the fiber surface. The layer is formed to a thickness of 1-60% from the surface based on the diameter of the potassium titanate fiber. The fiber surface is modified and reaction of the potassium titanate fiber with a light metal is suppressed in compounding to prevent the strength of the composite from deteriorating by forming the layer. The thickness of the coating layer is preferably about 200nm. The heating conditions are usually preferably 800-1600 deg.C in the case of 3hr heating time. Various accelerators (a hydrocarbon gas in the case of nitriding) may be used. |
