PURPOSE: To obtain a durable slide member having high heat conductivity and with the release of a sliding layer prevented by forming a diamond sliding layer on the surface of a substrate through a composite layer formed by filling metal, etc., between the diamond-base crystals. CONSTITUTION: A composite layer 3 and a sliding layer 7 are successively formed on the surface of the substrate 4 consisting of sintered hard alloy, cermet, silicon carbide sintered compact, etc., to obtain a slide member. The composite layer 3 is formed by filling at least one kind 2 among a metal such as Ni, a ceramic such as AlN and a resin such as acrylic resin between the diamond-base crystals 1 consisting of diamond and/or diamondlike carbon, and the thickness is preferably controlled to 0.05-3.0mm. The crystal 1 having 5-80% porosity is preferably formed by CVD. The metal, ceramic or resin 2 is formed by vapor deposition, thermal spraying, cladding, etc. The sliding layer 7 is composed of diamond and/or diamondlike carbon, and its thickness is preferably controlled to >=0.2μm.
