PURPOSE: To obtain highly concentrated isopropyl alcohol in high conversion ratio and reduce an energy required for concentration and a supplying amount of olefin by directly hydrating propylene and water in a liquid phase in the presence of a strongly acidic solid catalyst at a specific condition. CONSTITUTION: Propylene is directly hydrated with water at a high temperature and high pressure in the presence of a strongly acidic solid catalyst (e.g. cation- exchange resin) and purified to obtain isopropyl alcohol. In the process, propylene and water are continuously supplied into a reactor added with a solid catalyst and are hydrated at a critical temperature and a critical pressure or more of the propylene with keeping a concentration of isopropyl alcohol in the liquid phase to >=6wt.%. Total amount of gas phase in the reaction product is extracted and liquefied, separated from the gas component and purified. Isopropyl alcohol is useful as a solvent of paint, agricultural chemicals and medicine, a synthetic raw material and a detergent. |
