<p>PURPOSE: To charge even a large capacity battery in a short time by determining a maximum charging current of a battery while taking account of the capacities of an AC adapter and the battery and then controlling the actual charging current to the maximum value thus determined. CONSTITUTION: The battery charger comprises a circuit 14 for charging a battery 12 with the output from an AC adapter 10, and a circuit 16 for controlling the battery charging circuit 14 depending on the capacities of the AC adapter 10 and the battery 12. At first, the charging control circuit 16 determines the capacities of the AC adapter 10 and the battery 12 using a capacity determining means 18. A charging current setting means 20 then sets a value of charging current such that the charging time of the battery 12 is minimized and the AC adapter 10 does not produce an undue output based on the capacities of the AC adapter 10 and the battery 12 thus determined. Finally, a current control means 22 controls the battery charging current to the set value.</p> |
