PURPOSE: To provide particularly a means for reducing a packaging cost with an optical assembly for coupling an optical device and optical fibers. CONSTITUTION: This optical assembly has the optical device 30, a ferrule 41 for holding the optical fiber 40, a substrate 20 which has a groove 21 for positioning this ferrule 41 and is bonded with the optical device 30, a lid 23 which has a groove 25 for positioning the ferrule 41 and housing the optical device 30 and seals the optical device 30 and a receptacle 13 consisting of a part of the package 10 and the ferrule 41. As a result, high-accuracy passive alignment and hermetic sealing are simultaneously obtd. and handling of the fibers is facilitated. Since the automatic packaging of the surface packaging type plastic package is executed, there is an effect to reduce the cost of the optical assembly. |
