PURPOSE: To provide an electrode showing a large electric capacity by directly forming a highly crystalline pyrolytic graphite on a metal electrode substrate presenting a catalytic effect for accelerating graphitization to cover a negative electrode. CONSTITUTION: A highly crystalline pyrolytic graphite is formed by supplying hydrocarbon or a hydrocarbon compound as a starting material to a reaction system, and thermally decomposing it on an electrode base such as nickel having a catalytic effect of high crystallization by gas phase accumulation. As the hydrocarbon compound, a one in which a characteristic element containing an element selected from oxygen, nitrogen, sulfur, or halogen is added to or substituted by a part of hydrocarbon is used. The structure in which the electrode substrate is covered and connected with the highly crystalline pyrolytic graphite is used as the electrode of a battery containing an alkali metal as a dopant material, whereby it is resistant to charge and discharge cycle and over discharge, and the charging density is enhanced. Thus, a small-sized battery can be provided at low cost. |
