A layer of refractory metal is deposited on to a workpiece (7), comprising an electrically conducting substrate coated with a thin layer of ceramic, from a bath (3) of molten alkali metal halides contg. a salt of the metal in soln., possibly with the help of an electric potential applied between workpiece (7) and an electrode (8) also immersed in the bath. The ceramic is rendered impervious to protect the substrate from corrosion, or the substrate may be subsequently removed to leave a ceramic-refractory metal composite.
