PURPOSE: To attain recording even when a residual capacity of a memory card is less. CONSTITUTION: Digital image data obtained usually by image pickup are subject to 422 component coding at a 422 color conversion section 16 and data are compressed in the mode (high definition mode with a low compression rate or economy mode with high compression rate) set by a mode setting switch 32. When the residual capacity of a memory card 5 is less and the data are recorded by 420 component coding and the user gives a command by an intermediate mode setting switch 33, the digital image data are subject to 420 component coding in a 420 color control section 17 and the data are compressed and recorded in the memory card 5. Since the data quantity is less by the 420 component coding, even when the residual capacity of the memory card 5 is less, the data are recorded on the memory card 5.
