PURPOSE: To compress image data so as to keep constant image quality, regardless of information capacity that an image has. CONSTITUTION: An image memory 12 stores one frame or more of the digital image data from a digital image input/output circuit 11. A compression/ elongation processing part 13 reads the image data corresponding to one frame from the image memory 12, elongates the data after a compression is performed for the data and generates restored image data. The restored image data is stored in a restored image data memory 15. An image quality level decision part 16 reads digital image data and restored image data from the image memory and the restored image data memory, respectively, compares the data, decides the degradation degree of image quality and outputs a compression coefficient control signal. The compression/elongation processing part changes the compression coefficient based on the compression coefficient control signal and performs the compression processing for the image data from the image memory again. The obtained compressed data is stored in a compressed data storage part 14. |
