Rapid release coupling for two space launched objects

The rapid release connector for two objects (10,12) comprises a connecting part (20) which normally joins the objects. Unlocking means (52) comprise two conical elastic washers (56) interposed between one object (12) and a shoulder on the end of the connector. The two sections of the connector are normally joined by a fragile part (36). A release initiator (54) comprises a segmented nut (60) on which the first end of the connector is supported. A screw (62) in this nut has its head (64) supported against an anchoring piece (66) in the first object. The nut and screw lock the first end of the connector with the washers in a pre-stressed state. Pyrotechnics are used to segment the nut and as the washers are freed the fragile part is broken and the connector is separated into two sections each connected to the objects.
