MAGNETIC RECORDING AND REPRODUCING APPARATUS

PURPOSE: To obtain a magnetic recording and reproducing apparatus by which the recording speed of a magnetic tape can be detected even when the magnetic tape is fast-forwarded or rewound at high speed. CONSTITUTION: CTL signals are recorded on a magnetic tape 1 at constant intervals. A microprocessor 12 reproduces the CTL signals in a CTL track 2 by using a CTL head 3 so as to be counted. A take-up-side reel base 4 takes up the magnetic tape 1 which has been forwarded. The microprocessor 12 finds the rotation cycle of the take-up-side reel base 4 and of a supply-side reel base 8 so as to compute the total area of a magnetic-tape winding amount including the supply-side or take-up-side reel base. The microprocessor 12 detects a recording speed on the basis of a computed result. Consequently, on the basis of the total area of the tape winding amount including the take-up-side or supply-side reel base and on the basis of the counted value of the CTL signals reproduced during the constant rotation of any of the reel bases, the recording speed can, be detected irrespective of a change in the reproducing speed of the magnetic tape and in the gear ratio of a driving mechanism.
