The system has at least two inlet ducts per cylinder and a fuel injector with a controlled outlet to deliver fuel into one or both inlet ducts at the same time, depending on the engine operating mode. At least one of the two inlet ducts also has a shutter to control the air flow. The fuel injector is controlled by a cap (14) on its head (10) with apertures (15,16) which can both be aligned with the injector outlet orifices. In a second position of the cap one of the orifices (12) is open and the other (11) closed. The system can also be used to vary the duration of injection and to recycle exhaust gases.
