A method of manufacturing a ceramic article including the steps of forming a body of particulate material, compressing the body at its ends and sintering the body, the body being formed, prior to compression, of particulate materials layers of different bulk particle density. The ceramic article may comprise a ceramic pellet having a substantially cylindrical shape e.g., a nuclear fuel pellet.
