The invention concerns the field of tunnel boring machines and the operation of similar equipment. A composition of foamed clay is injected into the head (2) of the machine and mixed with the soil to be processed then removed along with the cuttings. Wear of metal parts, particularly wear caused by hard rock, may be greatly reduced and removal is facilitated.
