IMPROVED PRINTING SYSTEM

A document collating/printing system (100, 102, 104) provides automated error detection and error recovery in a high-volume printing application. The system (100, 102, 104) includes a media transporter (112, 114) for transporting the print media, a collator (100) having a plurality of retainers (106a-106h) for holding groups of document types, and a printer arrangement (102) that receives and processes presented sheets of the print media from the media transporter. The printing arrangement (102) and media transporter (112, 114) are configured and arranged to form a substantially planar path for transporting the print media from the media transporter (112, 114) toward print device (102) for printing on the print media. Further, a programmed controller (716, 732a-732m, 734a, 734b) controls the presentation of the print media to the media transporter (112, 114) and verifies that the presented sheet of print medium is correctly processed by the printer arrangement (102). Error detection and recovery are provided using selectively located sensors and diverters controlled by the controller (716, 732a-732m, 734a, 734b).
