The present invention relates to methods of predicting the tendency of a portion of a protein to form amphiphilic alpha or beta structure. It is based, at least in part, on the discovery that a number of porin proteins, which were previously believed to contain predominantly alpha amphiphilic structures, unexpectedly contained substantial amounts of beta structure.
