The process passes substances, such as water or liquid detergent, through a pipe system in order to clean and maintain it. The substances are fed into the system via a connection point (41), from sources (E,F) which are not free of bacteria. The connection point isolates the system from the sources using a heat barrier.Steam may be supplied at pressure in order to cause the sterilisation, and the heat barrier may be formed at the same time as the steam is fed into the system. The barrier may be formed in a valve (41) at the connection point. The use of Barrier temperatures of 150 degrees Celsius may also be used.
