A method for preventing the accumulation of iron and/or manganese in plants for cleaning up ground water by stripping comprises the addn. of a mixt. comprising cpds. which act both as chelating agents and buffers. The agent added in this method is also claimed, comprising a mixt. of at least two cpds. chosen from citric acid, sodium or potassium dihydrogen citrate, disodium or dipotassium hydrogen citrate, or trisodium or tripotassium citrate, each in an amt. of 0-99 wt.%.
