The starter consists of a drive housing (10) with a sleeve (12) which slides on the starter shaft and has a first end (16) which is extended radially to form a disc-shaped wall (18) co-operating with a drive ring (24) situated close to the other free end of the sleeve to form a space which receives the end of the control lever. The ring (24) is mounted on a cylindrical assembly surface (30) with a radial play relative to a shoulder (32). The free end of the sleeve (26) has a pre-assembly positioning surface (34) which is of smaller diameter than that of the cylindrical assembly surface (30). The assembly and positioning surfaces are linked by an intermediate cylindrical section with a diameter in between those of the two adjacent surfaces and e.g. conical in shape.
