PURPOSE: To obtain a new optically active liquid crystal compound useful as a material for ferroelectric liquid crystal display having excellent responsiveness and memory. CONSTITUTION: This optically active compound is shown by formula I (R<1> is an alkyl, an alkoxy, an alkenyl or an alkenyloxy; m is 0 or 1; ring A, ring B and ring C are each 1,4-phenylene, pyrimidine-2,5-diyl, pyridine-2,5-diyl, pyrazine-2,5-diyl or pyridazine-3,6-diyl; Y and Z are each a single bond, CH2 CH2 , C≡C, CH2 O or OCH2 ; W is F, OH, OCH3 or OCF3 ; R<2> is an alkyl; * is an optically active asymmetric carbon atom) such as (R)-2-[4-(5-hydroxy-2- undecenyloxyphenyl]--5-decylpyridine of formula II. A compound of formula I wherein W is OH is obtained by reacting a compound of formula III with an optically active oxirane of formula IV by using a strong base as an anion.
