PURPOSE: To obtain the subject treating material containing a water-absorbing agent consisting of surface-treated water-absorbing resin powder, a polyhydric alcohol and an excreta-treating base, capable of keeping high absorbing power to the excreta of breeding animals and having excellent agglomerating performance. CONSTITUTION: This treating agent contains (A) a water-absorbing material consisting of surface-treated fine powder of a water-absorbing resin having an average particle diameter of <=50μm, (B) a polyhydric alcohol (preferably glycerol) and (C) an excreta treating base (preferably pulp). The treating agent is produced preferably by adding glycerol as a crosslinking agent to the fine powder of a water-absorbing resin consisting of a polyacrylic acid salt resin in an amount excess to the necessary amount for crosslinking so as to get a crosslinked resin containing unreacted glycerol in the water-absorbing resin fine powder, crosslinking the resin to obtain the component A containing the component B and mixing the product with the component C.
