PURPOSE: To provide a light roll to prevent the crack due to the difference in the thermal expansion by forming on the inner surface of a cylindrical cemented carbide sleeve an inner layer of Al-Si alloy where the coefficient of thermal expansion is higher than that of the cemented carbide sleeve, and the difference is below the prescribed value. CONSTITUTION: In a composite carbide roll 3, the outer circumferential surface of a cylindrical cemented carbide sleeve 1 and cast in by a cylindrical inner layer 2. At the side face of the cemented carbide sleeve 1, the sleeve width is increased and the sleeve is inclined inwardly in the radial direction, and formed of WC-Co cemented carbide alloy with wear resistance and excellent in the high temperature strength, white the inner layer 2 is formed of Al-Si alloy excellent in the toughness. The thermal stress due to the thermal expansion attributed to the difference in the coefficient of thermal expansion and the difference in the temperature is reduced by forming the inner layer 2 of Al-Si alloy having the coefficient of thermal expansion which is more than that of the carbide sleeve 1 and whose difference is <=15×10<-6> ( deg.C<-1> ). No crack is generated in manufacturing the roll, and the quantity of the carbide alloy to be used is reduced to reduce the cost and weight.
