An electric arc furnace utilising alternative energy sources functions with undirect current or alternating current. Lances (12) are provided for the injection of pure or combined oxygen above the bath (16). Tuyeres (13) are provided for the injection of pure or combined oxygen below the bath in the hearth of the furnace. The tuyeres are cooled by the peripheral movement of a cooling gas mixture consisting of a gas with a high cooling power (methane, butane or inert gases etc.) and diluting gas (nitrogen or carbon dioxide). A means (15) is provided for the introduction of additives and/or powdered coal. The tuyeres include an oxygen delivery pipe (18) with a diameter greater than 8 mm. The oxygen pressure can be modulated according to the working steps with a constant minimum pressure delivery.
