In the method and in the arrangement according to the invention for planing fir torches or the like 6, the wood 1, 1' is supported on a base 2, 10 in series in its longitudinal/fibre direction and/or alongside one another in order to form an arrangement of at least several metres and the planing elements 3, 4, 8, 9 are driven along the surface 7, 7' of the wood 1, 1' in its longitudinal/fibre direction at an essentially even speed over the said arrangement of wood 1, 1'. The drive element to which the planing elements are fixed may be a tractor 20, which is driven between the long wood arrangements. By adjusting the speed it is possible to influence the ultimate surface quality and to apply the optimum planing speed in each individual case.
