Date May 30, 1996The present invention relates to a digital mobile communication system in which mobile stations (MS) and the fixed network comprise speech coders. The speech coders of the fixed network are located remote from the base stations (BTS) in transcoders (TRCU). In MMC calls, however, the transcoders are controlled to operate so that the frames received from a first base station (BTS) are forwarded with minor modifications through a pair of tandem connected transcoders to a second base station, without carrying out any speech encoding or decoding in the trancoders. Consequently, speech coding is only carried out in the mobile stations, and the speech parameters are simply passed through the mobile communication network, resulting in a significant improvement in the speech quality as compared with the conventional tandem coding. |
