Use of weapon system set apart from target designation system

The ground-based weapon system (11) and the target designation system (1) are joined by a data link (20) and their relative geographical positions are stored in the memory (13) of a computer (12). A passive infrared detector (2) gives an output associated with the angular position of its sweeper (3), from which a calculator (4) derives the direction (10) of the target (31) in elevation and azimuth. The computer determines by triangulation a number of possible target positions (33) for scanning (30, 30A) by the weapon system.
