Producing an automatic firing order at an instant td is claimed for an anti-tank trap comprising a support, a military charge, an igniter and a sighting device and being positioned on a preselected site, the trap being capable of non-contact detection of environmental changes having a horizontal action with a fixed firing axis in a vertical plane which is reached by the target (armoured vehicle) at an instant tmd. The process involves the sequential steps of: (a) first detection of the environment by FM/CW radar, the fixed transmission and reception lobes of which intersect the vertical plane ( delta ) and enclose second and third detection IR beams, during positioning of the trap; (b) determn. and memorisation of a first equiv. surface map SERref of the echoes as a function of distance, by means of the first radar detection; (c) second detection (IR) of a potential target at an instant t2 in a vertical plane (V) making an angle ( beta + alpha ) with the vertical plane ( delta ), to switch the igniter from its initial stand-by state to an active state; (d) third detection (IR) of the potential target at an instant t1 in a vertical plane (U) which is located between the vertical planes ( delta and V) and which is spaced by an angle ( beta ) from the plane ( delta ); (e) calculation of the time interval (t1-t2) and the radial angular velocity (dv/dt) of the target from the expression (dv/dt) = alpha /(t1-t2); (f) fourth detection of the environment by FM/CW radar, controlled by the second IR detection, immediately after instant t1 for determn. and memorisation of a second equiv. surface map (SERm) of the echoes as a function of distance; (g) at least one first measurement of the distance (dc) and of the SER of the target by calculation of the function SERm-SERref for each distance; (h) analysis of the target shape characteristics by simplified thermal imaging from data provided by the third IR detection; (i) decision to give the firing order taking into account the shape characteristics; size, distance and speed of the target; (j) calculation of the instant td from the preceding calculations and the characteristics of the military charge; and (k) initiating the charge at the instant td. Also claimed is an automatic igniter for carrying out the above process.
