The invention concerns a data carrier with an electronic module whose integrated circuit (9) has in addition to the usual components an electronic control unit (17) with a non-volatile memory region and a separate interface. During normal operation of the data carrier, data are written additionally in the electronic control unit. In the event of an operational failure of the electronic module of the data carrier, data can still be read out from the memory of the electronic control unit via the separate interface even if the integrated circuit is mechanically destroyed.
