The calender assembly has levers (14) to support the bearing pedestals of at least the centre rollers (8-10), mounted to carrier blocks (5-7). They pivot between an upper (15) and lower (16) limit stop. The lifting mechanism (22) for an over-stroke (Ho) is set so, in a relaxed setting, the carrier blocks (5,6,11) are lifted from the supports (32), and are moved into an over-stroke setting where the carrier blocks (7,11) of the uppermost rollers (10,12) are raised at least into the inoperative position.
