PURPOSE: To obtain the subject nucleotide, capable of forming a hairpin loop, containing one or more 2'-O-methyl ribonucleotides, having a sequence complementary to the target DNA or RNA, inhibiting the proliferation of a virus and useful as an antiviral agent, etc. CONSTITUTION: This new oligonucleotide has a base sequence represented by the formula (Am is a 2'-O-methyladenosine residue; Cm is a 2'-O-methylcytidine residue; Um is a 2'-O-methyluridine residue; Gm is a 2'-O-methylguanosine residue; the bond between respective nucleosides is a phosphorodiester or a phosphorothioate bond), etc., in which at least one of the nucleotides is a 2'-O- methylribonuclotide, is capable of forming a hairpin loop, contains a sequence complementary to the target DNA or RNA, has the resistance to the hydrolytic activities of a nuclease present in the living body and is capable of inhibiting the proliferation of a virus such as human immunodeficiency virus and useful as an antiviral agent for treatment, etc., of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome(AIDS). |
