The current interrupter has a compression spring (4) of electrically conductive material acting as a current conductor. Contact plates (7) are attached to one or both ends of the spring (4). The plates (7) are supported on an abutment surface (1) with a block profile. An actuator (5) engages the middle of the spring (4). The actuator (5) bends the spring (4) by pressure. This causes the contact plates (7) to tilt and brings them out of the contact with the current conductor. Preferably, the abutment surface (1) and the actuator (5) are arranged rotationally symmetrical relative to the spring (4). The abutment surface (1) may be part of a hollow housing whose wall radially engages the actuator (5).
