The square articles or packages are stored in sections formed of vertical shafts (22) with suitable internal cross-section. Each shaft has a closure unit (40) underneath for activation by the manipulator (48) which is movable in orthogonal horizontal directions (52,54).An outer element (56) of the manipulator matches the central hole (42) in the frame (30) of the closure unit and surrounds an axially movable plunger (58). The shafts are arranged in a chess board pattern to minimise the distance to be traversed by the manipulator en route from one to another.
