The print roller (1) is either of solid metal or of insulating material with an electrically conductive coating, and is earthed (11) through its shaft (2). The band (4) to be printed is held against it by a pressure roller (3) rotating on a parallel shaft (24) with internal bearings (23).The pressure roller comprises a metallic inner cylinder (5) surrounded by an insulating sleeve (6), a highly conductive layer (7) and a poorly conductive coating (8) for current limitation with uniform surface charge distribution. A suitably high voltage (e.g. 3 kV) is applied (12) to a concentric stator segment (13) from an AC source (9).
