Aryl hydrazides Ar-NR-NR1-G-X(+)A(-) (I) used in photographic Ag halide (AgX) materials for producing images with ultra-steep gradation; and new aryl hydrazides are of formula (IA) where Ar = substd. phenyl or another opt. substd. aryl gp.; G = CO, SO, SO2, PO2, PO3 or C=NR2; X(+) = a radical contg. a cationic gp.; R, R1 and R2 = H, 1-6C alkyl or 1-6C alkylsulphinyl; A- = an anion; R1-5 = 1-5 substit(s)., i.e. alkyl, hydroxyalkyl, haloalkyl, alkoxy, alkylamino, aliphatic acylamino or cycloalkyl with 1-20C; aryl, aryloxy or aromatic acylamino with 6-10C; aralkyl or aralkoxy with 1-3C in the alkylene chain; or a 1-4C aliphatic acylamino gp. substd.by phenoxy, opt. with 1-10C alkyl substit(s).
