A method for compressing by means of pressing generally organic material (2), comprising the feeding of the material into a precompression compartment (5) for a precompression of the material and feeding the material in batches or continuously into a pressing compartment (6) and pressing the material. The method is especially characterized in that the material (2) is subjected to a pressing in the precompression compartment (5) by means of repeated pressing forces acting preferably across the material feeding direction. The invention also relates to a device for performing the method.
