The appts. includes scale of rule (1), a sensing unit (2-5), an interpolation unit (27), and a correction unit (24). One of the objects carries the rule while it is sensed by the sensing unit carried by the other. The rule has incremental divisions with alternate transparent and non-transparent sections while being illuminated from behind by a light source (2). At least one individual deviation of a signal shape of a scanning signal (6,7), determined across several scale intervals (T), is carried out and is stored. The interpolation values (28) and/or following digital conversions in respective ADCs (12,13), of a scale interval (T) are subjected to at least one correction value for this scale interval. The digital signals (14,15) are supplied to the interpolation unit (27) across a correction unit (24).
