The system includes sensors consisting of light conducting fibres arranged on a measuring strip in exactly determined small distances from each other. Each sensor is accommodated at a determined depth from the measuring strip top edge in a narrow light collimating shaft (4). All the fibres emanating from the measuring strip (3) are bundled and supplied to the objective of a CCD camera (7). Objects to be measured are measured transverse to their length. The brightness value detected by the camera in each image position, allocated to each fibre, is evaluated by a computer. The number of the darkened sensors is used for determining the length of the object being measured esp. rods and tubes.
