A filter aid for use in alluviation, consisting of angular particles which do not deform under pressure and have an average aspect ratio (measured using an image analyser), as defined by the ratio between the smallest and largest particles, of 0.60-0.85, preferably around 0.7, the shape of the particles being uniform and isotropic.
